Our story to day is about personal bravery and one young man's
gallantry in WWII and how he won a Military Cross fighting in
Germany at the tender age of twenty.
(states the official citation)
The superb example and personal bravery over a long period, under
the
most difficult conditions, shown by Lieutenant Ventris was
beyond
praise and was largely responsible for this important objective
being'
captured," added the citation. His initiative, encouragement
and
coolness on the battle-field undoubtedly saved many lives."
